All Dr. Praeger’s products are kosher, lower in cholesterol, sodium and saturated fats and have no preservatives, artificial flavorings, or trans fats. Plus, there are also several gluten-free options available. www.drpraegers.com This group got their act together in 1994 when successful New Jersey cardiac surgeon Dr. Peter Praeger and his medical partner, Dr. Eric Somberg, helped keep a family business alive. They bought Ungar’s Gefilte Fish – a popular food company within the Jewish and Yiddish communities. Then they set out on a simple mission – to help people see nutritious food in a new light. They expanded the company to include all-natural and sensible products that would appeal to a wider consumer base. They kept the Ungar’s brand, which includes the original gefilte fish and other traditional Jewish foods, and developed Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods, which now includes dozens of all-natural, kosher frozen foods. Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods was born and soon became a family affair, with Dr. Praeger’s children – Larry and Danielle, and his nephew Jeffrey - working for the company. Dr. Somberg’s wife, Ellen, and son, Adam also play an integral role in the company. The families now run the business out of a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Elmwood Park, with 70 employees who feel like family members, too. While most Dr. Praeger’s products are suitable for both adults and kids alike, two of their lines are geared toward kids, like: • Littles: bite-size snacks that come in fun shapes and are available in potato, broccoli, sweet potato and spinach flavors; and • Fishies: available in lightly breaded or potato crusted varieties. • In addition, Dr. Praeger’s also makes Pizza Bagels, the perfect after-school snack. Dr. Praeger’s also has a number of kid-friendly recipe options available, including Sweet Potato Mac & Cheese, Chickenless Parmigiana Paninis and Spinach Stacks. And below are some other ideas for using Dr. Praeger’s products in fun ways kids will love. • Spinach and Alfredo sauce are a natural combination, and kids love the creamy, savory flavor of this Italian classic. For one serving, combine about a cup of low-fat milk, a tablespoon of butter, garlic and abundant freshly-grated parmesan cheese in a small saucepan and heat until cheese is melted. Add salt, pepper and chopped parsley and pour over cooked Spinach Littles. • For a kids’ take on Fish ‘n’ Chips, bake Potato Littles along with Fishies according to package directions and serve with ketchup. Not only does it taste just as good but it’s better for your kids than the original dish! • For a healthier sweet treat, make cinnamon-sugar sweet potato treats: sprinkle a light dusting of cinnamon sugar on top of cooked Dr Praeger’s Sweet Potato Pancakes, then top with a dollop of applesauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream (optional). Dr. Praeger’s philosophy is that good-for-you food should actually taste good, especially if you don’t let artificial ingredients, colors and fillers get in the way. That’s why our products are made with ingredients you recognize, including flash-frozen vegetables and fish from cold Northern waters. Our hearty California Veggie Burger doesn’t conceal its tasty spinach, broccoli, peas, carrots and onions – it puts them right where you can see and taste them! And our gluten-free options are an easy way to keep wheat out of your diet, while keeping the good things in, like fiber and taste bud-pleasing flavor. You’ll find Dr. Praeger’s in the frozen food section of supermarkets and other retailers including Trader Joe’s, Costco, Whole Foods and others. www.drpraegers.com
